St. Anthony of Padua shrine is the most popular Catholic shrine in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
The devotion to St. Anthony at Panjora village in Gazipur district has been held uninterrupted for centuries.
Many people believe a small statue of the Portuguese saint in a chapel has miraculous powers.
Christians and non-Christians flock to St. Anthony to make their wishes.
These include having babies, finding lost objects and overcoming personal and family challenges.
On the annual pilgrimage day on Feb. 7, more than 70,000 devotees flocked to the shrine to pray and pay respects to the saint.
St. Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on Aug. 15, 1195. He was ordained a priest and later became a Franciscan friar.
Anthony was widely acclaimed for his outstanding love of the poor and the sick as well as his expert knowledge of scripture.
He died in 1231 at the age of 35 in Padua, Italy, from a chronic case of edema.
The Vatican declared Anthony a saint a year later and in 1946 he was declared a doctor of the Church.
