June 7, 2026 : The first day of Pope Leo's 6-day trip to Spain began on Saturday with a visit to the Royal Palace of Madrid, where the Pope was welcomed by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and their daughters. In their speeches, both the monarch and pontiff touched on the long Catholic tradition that runs throughout Spain’s two thousand year-long history.

Addressing authorities and the diplomatic corps in Madrid, Pope Leo XIV said he traveled to Spain to encourage faith in the Gospel among believers, and reiterated that religious freedom and freedom of conscience must be protected.

No one remains alone

During the first afternoon of his trip to Spain, Pope Leo XIV visited the Cáritas Cedia Center, a facility primarily dedicated to assisting those who are homeless. Open 24 hours every day, it is about to celebrate 50 years of charitable service.

Historic prayer vigil

To close the day, Pope Leo travelled to the Plaza de Lima to meet with the young people of the city at a prayer vigil organized by the youth of Madrid.

After a musical performance, a small group of young people greeted him and asked questions related to the challenges they face in today’s world. After answering their questions., the Pope signed a Cross from the young people of Madrid.

The prayer vigil closed with Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction.
