Prior to 1999, Bannur was part of Mai De Deus parish, Puttur. Fr Stany B. Lobo (1998-2005), a young energetic and an enthusiastic priest who came to Puttur in June 1998, completed the work of the new church at Maril. During his tenure, two new parishes, one at Maril dedicated to Sacred Heart of Jesus and another at Bannur dedicated to St Antony, were established in the year 1999 by dividing the vast Puttur Parish.
