The Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, celebrated annually on March 25, commemorates the Angel Gabriel’s announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit. Occurring nine months before Christmas, this major feast marks the Incarnation — when God took on human flesh — and celebrates Mary’s obedient "yes" to God’s plan of salvation.

The event is recorded in Luke 1:26-38.

History of the feast

As early as the middle of the 6th century in the East, and the 7th century in Rome, there is evidence of this Feast celebrated on 25 March. Since this feast is connected with the Lord Jesus and to His entry into history, the revised liturgical calendar gave this feast the title of the “Annunciation of the Lord”, over the more popular Annunciation of Mary. The Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord is a Christmas feast even though it is not celebrated during the Christmas Season. Nine months before we celebrate the Lord’s birth, we celebrate His incarnation in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Date and Liturgical significance

Date of the feast is March 25, which is exactly nine months before Christmas. If this date falls during Holy Week or Easter Week, it is moved to the Monday after the Second Sunday of Easter.

In the Catholic Church, it is a solemnity, meaning the Gloria and Creed are recited or sung, even if it falls on a weekday in Lent.

International Day of the Unborn Child

The Annunciation emphasizes the sanctity of life from the moment of conception, making it a significant day for pro-life reflection and prayer.

On March 25, the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the International Day of the Unborn Child is celebrated in more than a dozen countries. The event originated in Argentina, and St. John Paul II played a fundamental role in its establishment.
