May 13, 2026 : Castel Gandolfo, the historic papal summer residence overlooking Lake Albano, marks a major milestone in its long-standing relationship with the papacy this year. For 400 years, popes have spent their summers in this green retreat just outside Rome. The grounds have also become a regular place of refuge for Pope Leo, who visits each week to rest—playing tennis, swimming, and riding horses.
The tradition dates back to 1626, when Pope Urban VIII first came to Castel Gandolfo. Since then, the beauty and tranquility of the residence have continued to attract his successors, making it one of the Church’s most enduring and cherished traditions.
