May 25, 2026 : Pope Leo XIV signed Magnifica Humanitas, the first encyclical of his pontificate, on May 15, the 135th anniversary of the promulgation of Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum. The document was released by the Holy See on May 25.
The encyclical develops the Churchʼs social teaching in light of artificial intelligence, situating new questions of human dignity, labor, and the common good within the tradition that runs from Rerum Novarum through Centesimus Annus and Laudato Si'.
In Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo warns that AI must be “disarmed” of systems that promote domination, exclusion, and even death—insisting it must serve the common good and never be separated from conscience and moral responsibility. The encyclical raises serious concerns about the ethical risks of AI, from exploitative supply chains and violations of privacy to job loss and the growing use of autonomous technologies in warfare. It also calls for greater oversight and global accountability as these tools rapidly evolve. Presented at the Vatican with voices from both the Church and the tech world, Magnifica Humanitas stands as a clear call to responsibility and unity in a new and uncertain era.
