May 7, 2026 : A solemn swearing-in ceremony for 28 new members of the Pontifical Swiss Guard took place at the Vatican on May 6, in the presence of Pope Leo XIV. The ceremony honors the historic sacrifice of 147 Swiss Guards who died in 1527, defending Pope Clement VII during the Sack of Rome.
The recruits undergo a series of tests to demonstrate their ability to protect the Holy Father at all times before being formally sworn in as members of the world’s oldest and smallest army.
The pope expressed his "esteem and gratitude" for their work.
