Kulur - Mangaluru, Aug 5, 2025 : The Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) Kulur unit, in collaboration with parishioners of St. Antony Church, observed World Environment Day by organizing a paddy transplantation drive in the fields of Mrs. Maizy Pereira, Melkoppala, Kulur on July 27.

Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si', the initiative aimed to promote ecological awareness and revive traditional farming practices. The harvested rice will be distributed to the needy, making the event both environmentally and socially meaningful.

The drive followed the success of “Gadyanth Ek Dees” (A Day in the Paddy Field) held at the same location on June 22, 2025, which encouraged the community to reconnect with nature. Over 85 participants, including youth, elders, and families, joined hands to plant the first saplings of the season, accompanied by folk songs and a spirit of camaraderie.

Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Victor Vijay Lobo blessed the field and urged the youth to continue fostering sustainable living. “When faith, tradition, and care for creation come together, they can sow the seeds of a more conscious and compassionate future,” he said.

With this initiative, ICYM Kulur has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and community solidarity.
