Australia has made history with the Online Safety Amendment Act, a world-first law that bans anyone under 16 from having accounts on major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Reddit, Twitch, Threads, and Kick. The legislation places full responsibility for enforcement on the platforms, with penalties of up to $32 million for companies that fail to take “reasonable steps” to prevent underage accounts. Donna Rice Hughes, President & CEO of Enough Is Enough, joins to break down how delaying social media access affects key aspects of adolescent development and how we can prevent children from simply migrating to less-regulated or anonymous online spaces.
