In 16th-century Lima, Peru, Martín de Porres, the illegitimate son of a Spaniard and a black freed slave, became a Dominican friar despite his society’s racial taboos. His simplicity, humility and measureless charity won the hearts of the friars and the city. His feast day is November 3.
