Each year, a group of American seminarians studying in Rome is ordained to the transitional diaconate in St. Peter’s Basilica. This year, beneath the majestic mosaics of the Basilica, 16 men from the Pontifical North American College committed their lives to the service of the Church through their ordination to the transitional diaconate. With over 1,500 guests from across the United States in attendance, the Basilica was filled with family and friends who had come to witness their generous response — their profound “yes” — to God’s call. Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt, of the Diocese of Grand Island, Nebraska, reminded the men of their calling to be sacramental signs of the Church and to the world — Christ who came “to serve and not to be served.”
