JUly 16 marks the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, one of the most cherished celebrations in the Eternal City. Throughout Rome, festivities are planned for the entire month of July, including Masses, processions, and a historic Marian boat procession on the Tiber River — a tradition nearly 500 years old. At the heart of the celebration is Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patroness of the Carmelite Order, and the Brown Scapular she is believed to have gifted to St. Simon Stock in 1251. The scapular remains a powerful sacramental of Marian devotion and spiritual commitment for both religious and lay faithful. From solemn devotions to joyful public processions, Rome’s celebration reflects a deep and enduring love for Mary, Mother of Christ, under her revered title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. EWTN Vatican journalist Bénédicte Cedergren has more.
