Black smoke rises above the Sistine Chapel, signaling that no pope has been elected on the first day of the conclave. The cardinals began their day with a solemn Mass, invoking the Holy Spirit’s guidance, before gathering in the Pauline Chapel to pray the Litany of the Saints and take their oath of secrecy in the Sistine Chapel. As ballots burned and black smoke emerged, faithful pilgrims packed St. Peter’s Square, watching and waiting in hope. The vote will continue tomorrow as the Church watches, waits, and prays.
