Thousands of Catholics gathered in St. Peter’s Square today to witness a historic moment as the body of Pope Francis was solemnly transferred to the Basilica, where he now lies in state. The liturgy, known as the Translation of the Coffin of the Deceased Pope, began at Casa Santa Marta—Pope Francis' residence throughout his 12-year pontificate—and was led by Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Flanked by the Swiss Guard and escorted by cardinals and the “Gentlemen of His Holiness,” the procession moved to the St. Peter's Basilica. Upon entering the Basilica, the choir sang the Litany of Saints as his body was carried down the center aisle and placed on a low, wooden platform in front of the Altar of the Confession and the tomb of St. Peter. He will lie in state for the next few days, ahead of Saturday’s funeral.
