March 11, 2026 : A south Lebanon parish lost its priest on March 9 when Father Pierre al-Rai of Al-Qlayaa died of wounds sustained from Israeli tank fire. The Manorite priest was killed in a bombing while going to the aid of a parishioner wounded in an earlier attack.

Christian communities in southern Lebanon have long tried to remain outside the region’s cycles of violence. But as the war along Israel’s northern border intensifies, those communities are increasingly finding themselves caught in the middle.

The Catholic parish priest chose to stay with his parishioners despite the fighting. His death has shocked Lebanon’s Christians and reignited debate over the dangers facing villages along the front line.

Pope Leo XIV has expressed profound sorrow over the priest's death.
