Dec. 16, 2025 : Pope Leo XIV presided over the final major celebration of the Holy Year with the Jubilee of Prisoners, drawing about 6,000 pilgrims to the Vatican. The pope celebrated Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on the third Sunday of Advent, Dec. 14, also known as Gaudete Sunday. The day also marked the Jubilee of Hope for prisoners and all those who work in prisons.
The pope reminded the faithful that Christ desires “that no one be lost” and that all “may be saved.”
Participants included detainees and their families, prison chaplains, correctional officers, police, and prison administrators from nearly 90 countries. Inmates shared what the experience meant to them and the role that hope plays in their spiritual lives.
