Nov. 25, 2025 : Rome’s celebration of the Jubilee of the Poor became a powerful reminder that the Church’s mission begins with encounter. In continuity with the 9th World Day of the Poor observed on Nov. 16, the Vatican welcomed the faithful for Mass with Pope Leo XIV, followed by a shared lunch within its walls.
Across the city in Trastevere, the Community of Sant’Egidio opened the doors of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere to 150 homeless individuals and families, offering not only a meal, but genuine friendship. Volunteers — from high school and university students to longtime helpers and even Rome’s new police commissioner — came together to serve and listen.
From young volunteers discovering a new perspective on service, to migrants finding dignity and peace through Sant’Egidio’s “Good Shepherd” project, the day revealed the transformative power of presence. As parish priest Fr. Marco Gnavi reflects, those in need desire more than food or clothing — they long for family, friendship, and love.
Overall, this celebration became a living sign of mercy, compassion, and the deep human connections that renew hope.
