Mississauga, ON – July 17, 2025 – International Master (IM) Aaron Reeve Mendes has made history at the 2025 Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC), securing First Place in the Under 18 Open Category. The championship was held in Surrey, British Columbia from July 8 to 11, 2025.

At just 12 years old, Mendes becomes the youngest player in Canadian history to take clear first place in the highly competitive U18 Open section, finishing with an exceptional 6.5 out of 7 points.

In addition to this groundbreaking performance, he also claimed first place in the Canadian Youth Chess Blitz Championship, defending his blitz title with another commanding finish.

This unprecedented achievement marks a significant milestone for Canadian chess, placing Mendes among the nation’s brightest young talents and reinforcing Canada’s growing presence in the international chess arena.

Mendes has expressed gratitude to his coaches, peers, and the broader chess community for their support and mentorship throughout his journey.

With this victory, he earns the honour of representing Canada at the upcoming World Youth Chess Championship in Albania, further cementing his status as one of the country’s rising stars in the global chess landscape.

About Aaron R. Mendes

Aaron is the son of Arun and Jennifer Mendes, who hail from Taccode near Moodbidri. He began his early schooling in Mangalore, where he was first introduced to chess. As his talent became evident, Aaron moved to Canada to receive advanced training and greater opportunities to grow in the sport.
