March 11 - 12, 2017 : “Today, women are empowered and have even reached the Moon”, said Fr Michael Mascarenhas, the Parish Priest of Vijayadka Church, in his address to the gathering at Vijayadka on the occasion of International Womens’ Day.

The Self Help Groups of Vijayadka and Neermarga promoted by CODP® Mangaluru, celebrated International Women’s Day on 11thand 12th March 2017. The programmes were held to honour women in general for their role in Nation building.

Fr Michael greeted the women and congratulated them on their achievements. “Only if a woman confidently states that she is empowered, there will be changes in herself, in society and in the world at large”. Dr Sr Linet D’Souza, resource person of the day, spoke about women’s health and the importance of having general health check-ups at regular intervals.

Mrs Shanthi D’souza, Project Coordinator-CODP and Mrs Emi D’Souza, Shree Sangah President were also present. Sr Mariazinha, Administrator of St Lawrence Rural Health Centre, Vijayadka, honoured some of the SHG members. Mrs Juliet Pinto, Mrs Leena D’Souza and Mrs Veera; welcomed, compeered and proposed the vote of thanks respectively. 55 women attended.

At Neermarga the programme was held in Merlapadavu Church hall on 12th March 2017. CODP Director, Fr Oswald Monteiro greeted all women on International Women’s day. He advised the members to scale new heights in all aspects of life. Referring to a recent incident of female infanticide, he stated that gender inequality greatly affects the development of society where women are subjugated and treated without respect and equality. Thereafter, certificates were awarded to women candidates on completion of their tailoring course.

On this occasion a talk on ‘Responsibility of parents in bringing up children’ was given by Mrs Suchita Crasta. Earlier in the day, Mrs Theresa D’Souza welcomed the gathering of around 50 women members. Mrs Flavia compered the programme and Mr Hubert thanked the participants.
