Udupi, Oct 31, 2016 : At the city's 13th edition of the inter-parish diocesan level Konkani singing competition held at St John the Evangelist Church Shankerpura, on Sunday October 30, Mother of Sorrows Church, here emerged winners.

Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva and St John the Evangelist Church, Pangala followed as first and second runners up.

The singing competition was hosted by ICYM Pangala unit.

Fr Leslie D’Souza, parish priest St John the Evangelist Church, inaugurated the competitions by lighting the lamp. In his inaugural speech he wished all the participants from the various parishes of the diocese. "We have invited good external judges from the outside the diocese. I do not know who will win the competitions. But let us treat the results in a sportive manner," he told the gathering.

Mark Vaz vice president of the parish pastoral council, Seema D'Souza, secretary of the parish pastoral council, Fr Mahesh D'Souza campus director of Don Bosco Shirva, Fr Vincent Coelho principal of St John the Evangelist PU College Shankerpura, judges Fr Ronald Seraro, Sachin Sequiera and Prem Lobo, Olivera D’Sa, president ICYM, Pangala unit, Jeevan Pereira, secretary, Clara Mendonca and Alphonse Mendonca animator of the unit were present for the occasion.

Ria D’Souza compered the inaugural ceremony, and Olivera D’Sa welcomed the guests and the partipants.

Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Diocese of Udupi presided over the programme. Fr Leslie D’Souza, Fr Edwin D’Souza, director, ICYM, diocese of Udupi, Mark Vaz, Seema D'Souza, Fr Vincent Coelho, Fr Ronald Seraro, Sachin Sequiera and Prem Lobo, Olivera D’Sa, Jeevan Pereira, Clara Mendonca and Alphonse Mendonca were present at the valedictory ceremony.

Alphonse Mendonca gave a brief introduction about the judges of the competitions.

In his presidential speech Bishop of Udupi Dr Gerald Lobo said "Everyone is egar to see the results. On behalf of the diocese, I thank the director of the unit. As per the diocesan pastoral plan, taking the history of Konkani to the next generation is one part, of which the mother language is a part."

"There are talented persons in diverse fields in this diocese. Since 13 years, Pangala unit has been organizing the event and has given a platform to showcase the various talents. Many parishes have been taking part in the completions year after year. And if all the parishes of the diocese taken part in the completions then our pastoral plan will be successful," he said.

Fr Leslie D’Souza thanked the ICYM unit for its successful organization. He also thanked the parishioners for their support towards the same.

21 parishes from the diocese took part in the competitions run for the 13th year.

Olivera D’Sa Welcomed the guest. Jeevan Pereira delivered the vote of thanks. Rolson Fernandes, PRO of the Unit read out the winners' names.

Dr Gerald Lobo, Fr Leslie D’Souza, Fr Edwin D’Souza handed over the prizes to the winners.
