Mangaluru, June 3 : "The capacity to learn is a gift, the ability to learn is a skill, the willingness to learn is a choice."

St Agnes School organised a workshop on phonetics for the teachers on 18th and 19th of May 2022. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Raju Victor. He was the former professor at St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru and has conducted umpteen number of seminars and workshops for teachers and students of different institutions. The sessions were for two days dealing with correct pronunciation, intonation and grammar in English.

Teachers were provided with a handbook on phonetics. Letter Sound Order was taught in a specific order. This enabled the teachers to learn the technique of teaching children to pronounce accurately and begin building words in English at an early age. The teachers were taught the 42 main letter sounds. This included sounds of the letters in English alphabet as well as digraphs such as sh, th, ai and ue and blending the sounds together to read and write new words. Then identifying the sounds in words and listening for the sounds in words. Lastly, the teachers were trained with tricky words which have irregular spellings. The Letter Sounds were taught to the teachers a number of times to make them well versed with the correct pronunciation of each letter sound.

The workshop proved to be beneficial for the staff members as they found it to be a great course with an abundance of ideas for active methodology. Mrs. Madhura welcomed the gathering and Mrs. Manisha Saldanha thanked the resource person and the management for conducting such a useful workshop.

"Learning is never cumulative; it is a movement of knowing which has no beginning and no end."
