Mangaluru, Sep 11 : National Literacy Day was observed at Carmel English Medium Higher Primary School Kotekar on September 9, 2023, to celebrate and emphasize the importance of literacy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared September 8 as International Literacy Day in 1966. The program aimed to raise awareness about literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.

The event began with a prayer song and a welcome dance. Charvi, a Grade IV student, warmly welcomed the gathering, while Arnavi highlighted the significance of the day. The esteemed guest speaker for the event was Mrs Shobhana, Retired lecturer of School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya. Sr. Jecintha D'sa, the Principal, Sr. Ashwina, the coordinator, Mrs. Sunila, the school counselor, and Sr. Preethi Savitha D'Souza were also present.

The students of Grade IV performed a skit as a dance to showcase the importance of National Literacy Day and reminisce about their school life. In her speech, Mrs Shobhana , the chief guest, emphasized that education means showing respect, helping others, and cultivating good behavior. She also stated, "Participation is more important than winning. One who participates becomes a hero." The significance of Literacy Day was highlighted during her speech.

The event was highly successful and well-received. The program was hosted by Varshini, Veeksha ,Chaithanya and Suhan and Himani R Kulal from Grade IV expressed gratitude to the audience.
