Mangaluru , Mar 8 : Spandana Trust of Infant Mary’s Convent Jeppu celebrated women’s day on 8th of March, 2019. Rev. Sr. Marcelline Braggs presided over the function. Sr. Anna Maria Desa was the chief guest and the resource person of the day. Sr. Helen Fernandes, administrator, Spandana Trust was on the stage. Mrs. Suchitra president and Mrs. Kavitha K secretary of the Federation were also present.

The programme started with a prayer song by the women of the Self-help groups. The president of the programme Rev. Sr. Mercelline Braggs spoke at the occasion and said woman is the person who sacrifices her pleasures and luxuries for the good of the family and society. At times she forgoes many things in life for making others happy but most of the time she is used for the pleasure of others . “When we celebrate the women’s day we have to think that the women is a person who lives in the family, a girl in the family, as a sister to her brothers, daughter to the parents, serviceful wife to her husband , thus she serves people in different stages in different ways. It is most of the time forgotten”. She urged to give due respect and honour to the women not only on the women’s day but always. Mean time she appreciated the yeomen service rendered by the Spandana Trust for the empowerment of women through the S.H.Gs that they serve.

The chief guest and the resource person Sr. Anna Maria Desa B.S. spoke on the human trafficking and said it is the women who is exploited most and sold today, more than any other commodity. Among the women those are missing only 10 percent are found. Among them some are used as bonded labourers, child labourers, child marriage, sex workers, devadasies, for pornography and for blue films. The main reason for this is poverty, unemployment and illiteracy. To stop this system we should give awareness and those who are involved are to be punished severely. This is a big business as there is no tax and it is a very easy money earning trade, she said.

There was a short entertainment programme which was performed by the S.H.G members. The programme was organised by the social workers and the animators of Spandana Trust. Mrs. Irene Menezes proposed the vote of thanks. Mrs. Flavy D Souza and Mrs. Thejakshi were the master of ceremony.
